Sparganium stoloniferum is a PERENNIAL. It is in flower from May to October, and the seeds ripen from May to October. The flowers are monoecious and are pollinated by Wind.Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers wet soil and can grow in water. The sparganium stoloniferum root is abortifacient, emmenagogue, galactogogue and sedative. A decoction of the root is used in the treatment of abdominal pain, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea and chest pains.
Two new phenolic compounds, 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-4-methoxycarbonyl-5-hydroxybenzofuran (1) and 1-methoxycarbonyl-2, 3-dihydroxydibenzo[b, f]oxepine (2), were isolated from the tuber of Sparganium stoloniferum. The structures of both new compounds were determined on basis of spectroscopic means including HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR experiments.
